Elon Musk Has Paywalled Grok Images

Elon Musk has limited the use of Grok on the social media site X, to paid members only after reports of abusive images being made with Grok by users.

After recent reports of X users abusing images of women on the platform, Elon Musk has limited who can use the AI chatbot on his social media platform. It's being reported that only paid users of x.com can request Grok to generate images.

It seems that a threat from the UK government to ban X is what led to this decision. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall says she would back regulator Ofcom if it blocks UK access from the platform.

Elon's reply to the UK government was that they “want any excuse for censorship”. It sounds like it's well within their power to block Musk's social media platform according to Secretary Kendall stating that the Online Safety Act “includes the power to block services from being accessed in the UK, if they refuse to comply with UK law”.

According to this Guardian article, paid members can still use the chatbot, since X has their identity and credit card information on file and can identify the user if they need to.

It is also being reported that the separate Grok app is still available to free users to generate images. So, while people can't use the AI to generate the abusive images in real-time without paying, they can still use the free app to do so. And that is exactly what they are doing.

A report from 404 Media covers how a group chat with users on Telegram are working together to “jailbreak” the Grok app and get the AI chatbot to create even more disturbing content. They report that these users have been able to get Grok to create fully nude images and even images of sexual acts. The Telegram users even talk about being worried that with all the press attention on Grok right now, they might lose their ability to continue making these images.

Indonesia has already temporarily blocked Grok AI from their country. Indonesia’s communications and digital minister Meutya Hafid said, “The government views the practice of non-consensual sexual deepfakes as a serious violation of human rights, dignity, and the security of citizens in the digital space.”

India’s IT ministry has also demanded Musk make changes to the AI chatbot, giving the platform 72 hours to do so.

While the Trump administration has stayed silent on this issue. Other members of the US government have spoken out. Members of the Democratic Party have asked Google and Apple to remove Musk's apps from their app stores, claiming that what is happening on the social media site violates their app stores terms of service.

Some people see Musk limiting Grok to paid users as just another way for him to monetize the platform and not to actually limit the abuse. They just see it as a way for him to get more people to sign up for the premium membership. Seeing how he hasn't stated that he will make changes to the AI to limit it from making this type of content, they might be right.

X is losing money and while it's still the top player when it comes to the short form microblogging sites, its user base is shrinking.

Things aren't looking good for X and Musk. I think this could be the straw that breaks the camel's back. He's already taken heat for the increased hate speech on the platform, now, with reports of CSAM material and other sexually abusive images on the social media site, this might not be something he can just brush off. His claims of free speech can only get him so far.
